Asinelli & Garisenda Towers - Bologna, Italy

They are the most famous of towers dating to the 12th and 13th century. Back in those times there were over 100 of these towers and I believe the only reason these started rising above is because everyone wanted to outdo each other (ego) with the biggest towers etc. Now 20 survive only including the most famous pictured above.
